Bronzi d' Riace

If asked what are the best marble sculptures in the world, you might answer David or Venus de Milo. What about the best bronze sculptures? We would suggest they are Bronzi d' Riace A & B.

These 2 bronze warriors were found on the seabed in 1972 and are Greek sculptures from the 5th century BC. They are amazing. Worth the trip to Reggio Calabria and the wait for the museum to open just to see them. The rest of the museum was also interesting.

Reggio Calabria has a great location on the coast opposite Sicily but has little else going for it except for the beach and A and B.

Isn't it amazing they could do such fabulous work so long ago. I googled them to have a look at what you saw today!

Living in Calabria, I had always known of the Bronzes, but when I finally went to see them...WOW. There is just no way to describe in words how amazing they are in person; photos simply can't do them justice (although they're still quite gorgeous in photos of course).

The Riace bronzes are astounding and astonishing. Beyond Reggio's gorgeous waterfront, it becomes harder to find its charm. But keep looking -- the old castle, St. Paul's Church and it's marvelous mosasics, the cathedral and most importantly, the museum of Padre Gaetano Catanoso, the first priest from Calabria ever named a saint (in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI). He was extraordinary, and he was a cousin of my grandfather. For more information: www.mycousinthesaint.com
