Raining in Rio

We awoke to rain this morning so decided to go and see the city highlights rather than the wet beaches.

We caught the Metro to Carioca in the downtown area and visited this beautiful musical theatre with its gilded cupolas. Surrounding the square where this is, are many beautiful historical buildings including the Museum of Fine Arts and the National Library which is celebrating its bicentenary this year.

As a complete contrast we walked over to the Metropolitan Cathedral. This is extremely modern and about the height of a 15 to 20 storey buuilding. It is built as a huge dome with full height stained glass windows.
It was most unusual.

We saw many very modern buildings in addition to the beautiful historic reminders of the colonial past.
