Lima

Lima is a large city where you rarely see the sunshine! It is due to a combination of fog and pollution.

We spent time in the city centre visiting the Franciscan Monastery with the large catacombs a highlight. The bones were sorted and displayed as sculls and femur as the other bones have rotted away as the bodies were put in with just a cloth cover so they used lime to speed up the process of decomposition and try and cover the smell. Lima was considered to be the world's smelliest city at the time. Perhaps the city centre is not the best location for the catacombs!

The Franciscan Monastery. We also visited the church but no photos inside or in catacombs

We walked up the street with the buildings still with the traditional verandahs. Walking up with us were a Peruvian Folk group that we saw at the Presidents Palace.

The main square with the Cathedral. We drove past the other cathedral...the football stadium earlier.

In the afternoon we visited the Larco Herrerro Museum, the major Pre Columbian Museum of Peru. We saw works of the civilizations before the Inca including Chimu that ruled for a much longer period than the Incas. The Incas simply got the credit as they were in power when the Spanish arrived but only ruled for about 150 years.

                                                                         Chimu figures

                                                                    A Nazca Drum

There was an entire gallery for the erotic works. This was one of the less extreme.

Gail outside the Museum. A fantastic place to visit.
