Maastricht : Jewel of The Netherlands

Our few days at Maastricht have been marvelous. It is considered the jem of the south if not the entire country! It is compact although away from the train station. Our accommodation is like something out of a home beautiful magazine. It has been the perfect base to explore the old city. Maastricht ia a hip happening place with the modern superimposed over an old Roman town and historic churches and buildings. It is high on our list of favourites!

Considered to be the worlds most beautiful bookshop: The Boekhandel Dominicanen bookstore.

Gail with a beautiful water sculpture

As expected in Maastricht there were modern sculptures in front of the historic buildings.

We visited lots of churches. These two were on the other side of the Vrijthof..the square that is our home in Maastricht.

We walked down to the Basilica Our Lady of the Sea. We liked the fact that it had its own ice cream shop! Not as good as the church in Italy that had its own bar. They still take up collections!

The town is on the Maas River. This is the highest area of The Netherlands and we are well away from the windmills and canals of the west. We are moving on to Germany for our next stop.

We walked to the area with old Roman fortifications and Medieval wall and towers. It was sunny and people were strolling and enjoying the sunshine.

                                                            Rob inspects the artillery.

It is a very picturesque town

Helpoort  1229  The entry point into the city

We retired to one of the many little squares for drinks and later lunch.

You deserve at least one beer for every church that you visit.Afterall it is Sunday!

I show Matt your pictures at breakfast time, way too early for beer, he still feels tormented! :-) I just want to know what is the point of putting the cannon OUTSIDE the castle?

It was a Medieval EWS Early warning System. Someone came along and they fired the cannons and everyone heard it. A Medieval EWS.
